A new study, reported inThemagazine, finds that it may be legal to sell erectile dysfunction drugs online, but that the online pharmacist can get to work. The study, published today inProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, looked at data from nine randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of men who have sex with men, including those who have been prescribed a prescription for erectile dysfunction (ED). Participants in these trials were randomly assigned to receive either sildenafil, or placebo, or to receive a prescription for erectile dysfunction drugs. Participants were also told they would be able to get prescriptions online. In the first trial, participants had been taking sildenafil and taking a prescription for ED drugs, while in the second trial they were taking a prescription for ED drugs and not taking the prescription for ED drugs. Participants were also given a drug called flibanserin, which is sold over-the-counter under a brand name, Viagra, and which has the same active ingredient as sildenafil. Participants also were given a drug called tadalafil. Both sildenafil and flibanserin were significantly more likely to have a positive test result in the sildenafil group than the placebo group in both the sildenafil and placebo groups. Participants in the sildenafil group also had a higher probability of receiving a positive test result in the sildenafil group than the placebo group in both the sildenafil and placebo groups. In the sildenafil group, both sildenafil and placebo participants reported a higher probability of a positive result in the sildenafil group than the placebo group in both the sildenafil and placebo groups. Participants also reported more negative side effects in the sildenafil group than in the placebo group. The study, reported today inThe Journal of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, also found that erectile dysfunction drugs could be safely used online, as long as they were not prescribed for people who have a serious heart condition or a severe cardiovascular problem such as a heart attack or stroke. The study authors wrote: "We have previously shown that a single tablet of sildenafil, administered three times a day, is safe to use in people with a normal heart function. However, if the person is taking a combination of nitrates and other treatments for angina, we believe that this may be a safer alternative to taking a tablet of sildenafil."
The study was based on data from the eight RCTs on which the researchers had randomised participants to either sildenafil or placebo (a brand name for Viagra) for erectile dysfunction, or a placebo for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The researchers assessed participants using a questionnaire that asked about their erectile function. The researchers then asked whether they had taken ED drugs for more than a year. If yes, the participants had taken erectile dysfunction drugs, regardless of whether they had been prescribed a prescription for ED drugs or not.The researchers found that participants taking sildenafil had a statistically significantly higher probability of having a positive test result in the sildenafil group than the placebo group, regardless of their baseline blood pressure. They also reported a statistically significantly higher probability of having a positive test result in the sildenafil group in the sildenafil group than the placebo group, regardless of their baseline blood pressure.
